Get to know Sukaina Nathoo

I began my career working for community non-profit agencies in the United Kingdom where I was born and raised. I was able to support mental health for minority groups. I joined steering groups to inform the British government on how best to fund and offer these services. I later joined the largest National Health Service (NHS) mental health trust and worked with a team of nurses, counsellors, and psychiatrists. I trained to offer the NADA protocol for acupuncture and learned about herbal teas and their potential benefits during the recovery journey of many patients.

I have continued to support individuals experiencing concurrent disorders since moving to Canada. I have worked in several Toronto hospitals supporting patients and loved ones in the emergency room, inpatient and outpatient units. I supported patients at any point in their treatment journey. I have a great passion for teaching and have developed and delivering skills based classes to teach patients how to cope with distressing emotions and how to explore behaviours to make meaningful changes.

As a Registered Psychotherapist with over 16 years of experience in mental health, I have trained in many therapies I feel confident can support you resolve the issues you are struggling with. I use a customized approach to treatment of individuals, couples, and families. Customized therapy allows your specific needs to be addressed versus a one-treatment size fit for all. I use traditional talk therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) as well as experience-based therapies such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Emotional Transformation Therapy (ETT) which have produced great results for people looking to heal in therapy.

I specialize in overcoming anxiety, depression as well as trauma. I have worked with individuals who identify with borderline personality disorder and successfully work with individuals, couples and families to improve attachment so that relationships with yourself and others feel more fulfilling.

As a couple or family member experiencing disruptive patterns of engagement it can be difficult to end the cycle. Our relationships are the place we want to feel the safest and seen. When we don’t feel our needs are being met in our relationships, we can feel disconnected and isolated. I use Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT) the gold standard of couples therapy for both individuals, couples, and families as it powerfully uses emotion to shift our experience and engagement with one another.
