Anxiety is the body’s built in alarm system for future uncertainty or perceived threat, made up of both emotional unease and physical sensations, a racing heart, a tight chest, restlessness.

An anxiety disorder is different: anxiety that’s become chronic, excessive, and disruptive to daily life rather than tied to one passing moment.

From the inside, anxiety often sounds like: “My mind won’t stop running through everything that could go wrong.”

Stress is the body’s reaction to carrying too much right now. Worry is the mind replaying one specific what if. Anxiety is when that alarm system keeps firing even after the load, or the thought, has passed.

Stress, Worry, or Anxiety?

These three get used interchangeably, but they aren’t quite the same. Stress usually responds to something specific and external, a deadline, a conflict, a change, and it tends to ease once that thing resolves. Worry tends to centre on one particular thought, replayed again and again. Anxiety can do both of those things and also persist or generalize beyond them, showing up even without a clear trigger in the moment. Anxiety is also often assumed to be purely mental, but it shows up in the body just as often, tightness, a racing pulse, shortness of breath, and those physical signals frequently go unrecognized as anxiety at all.

Anxiety in Therapy

Therapy offers a place to sort out what’s actually driving an anxious pattern and build a broader set of ways to respond to it, rather than managing it alone indefinitely.

This entry is for general education, to make anxiety easier to understand. It isn’t a diagnosis, and reading about it here doesn’t mean it applies to you. It isn’t a replacement for professional evaluation, and it can’t speak to your specific situation.
