Family therapy is psychotherapy that works with the family as a whole, rather than treating one member as the problem to be fixed.

It’s like repairing one hinge on a door that’s been squeaking the whole way, you don’t need to rebuild the whole door to make a real difference.

You Don’t Need Everyone on Board to Start

Family therapy doesn’t require every family member to attend, or even agree to come, for it to be worth starting. Working with whoever is willing can still shift the patterns the whole family shares.

Starting Family Therapy

Family therapy is led by a trained, licensed professional working to keep the process fair for everyone in the room, whether the focus is a specific conflict, a big transition, or supporting a family member through a hard stretch. Family therapy at Purposeful Change starts with whoever is ready to begin.

This entry is for general education, to make family therapy easier to understand. It’s not a substitute for sitting down with a therapist as a family, and it can’t tell you whether it’s the right fit for your situation specifically.
