Interpersonal Effectiveness is DBT’s fourth and final skill module, a set of communication skills for expressing needs, setting boundaries, and working through conflict while still keeping self-respect and the relationship intact.

It’s built around three goals: getting what you’re asking for (Objective Effectiveness), protecting the relationship (Relationship Effectiveness), and keeping your own self-respect (Self-Respect Effectiveness).

It builds directly on DBT’s other three skill modules, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation, rather than standing alone; the calm, regulated foundation those skills provide is what makes these communication skills usable in the moment.

Three Scripts for Three Different Jobs

DBT teaches three acronym-based skill sets for this module: DEAR MAN, for asking for what you want or saying no, GIVE, for protecting the relationship while you do it, and FAST, for keeping your own self-respect intact. Imagine someone using DEAR MAN to ask a colleague for a deadline extension: describing the situation factually, expressing how the crunch feels, asking clearly for the extension, and reinforcing why it helps them both, all while staying focused, appearing confident, and staying open to negotiating.

Interpersonal Effectiveness in Therapy

This module tends to come after the other three in a full DBT program, once a person has some grounding in staying present and managing intense emotion, since communicating well under pressure is easier with that foundation already in place.

This entry is for general education, to make Interpersonal Effectiveness easier to understand. It reflects one skill module within a larger structured program, not the whole picture. It isn’t a diagnosis or a replacement for professional help, and it can’t tell you which of DBT’s skills would help you most.
