Overthinking is the umbrella term for a few different directions a mind can spiral in: replaying something that already happened (rumination), fearing something that hasn’t happened yet (worry), or freezing over a decision that needs to be made (analysis paralysis).

Naming which direction you’re actually stuck in is often the fastest way to find a way out of it.

It works something like a car stuck spinning its wheels, a lot of energy, not much distance covered, and the fix depends on which wheel is actually stuck.

Which Direction Are You Stuck In?

Replaying the past sounds like going over a conversation or a mistake again and again, looking for what you should have done differently. Worrying about the future sounds like running through what-if scenarios, trying to prepare for or prevent something bad. Freezing over a decision sounds like being unable to choose because every option seems to have a catch. Each direction tends to respond to slightly different tools, which is part of why naming it matters.

Not a Sign of Intelligence or a Disorder

Overthinking is extremely common, and by itself, it isn’t evidence of being unusually smart or of having a diagnosable condition. Persistent overthinking, especially the past-focused, replaying kind, is worth paying attention to if it starts to feel constant or if it’s tangled up with a low or hopeless mood, since that combination is worth bringing to a therapist rather than working through alone.

Overthinking in Therapy

Therapy can help identify which direction a spiral tends to run in and build tools suited to that specific direction, rather than treating overthinking as one single problem with one single fix.

This entry is for general education, to make overthinking easier to understand. It isn’t a diagnosis, and reading about it here doesn’t mean it applies to you. It isn’t a replacement for professional evaluation, and it can’t speak to your specific situation.
