A panic attack is a sudden, brief surge of intense fear and physical discomfort, racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, trembling, dizziness, that peaks within minutes.

It can feel like something is seriously wrong, but it isn’t physically dangerous, even though it’s genuinely frightening in the moment. It usually starts to ease within about ten minutes and settles within thirty, though feeling shaky or worn out afterward can last longer than that.

During an attack, the thought is often simply: “Something is wrong, and I can’t make it stop.”

A panic attack feels like your body’s alarm system going off at full volume for no real fire. Deeply uncomfortable and even frightening, but it will not hurt you, and the alarm always turns itself off within minutes.

Having One Doesn’t Mean Panic Disorder

A single panic attack, even a distressing one, doesn’t automatically mean panic disorder, which specifically involves repeated attacks plus an ongoing fear of the next one.

What Tends to Help in the Moment

Grounding, things like slowing the breath or noticing a few things that can be seen, heard, or touched right now, is a common way people find their way back to feeling more anchored during an attack.

Panic Attack in Therapy

Therapy can help someone understand what’s happening in an attack and build a longer term plan if they start to happen more than once.

This entry is for general education, to make panic attacks easier to understand. It isn’t a diagnosis, and reading about it here doesn’t mean it applies to you. It isn’t a replacement for professional evaluation, and it can’t speak to your specific situation.
